  1. Release notes for RasMol 2.6beta2
  2.  
  3. NOTE: RasMol's built-in help, and the RasMol Manual, document the last
  4. full-release, version 2.5.  To have all documented changes since then,
  5. you need this document ('26beta2') plus the document '26beta1'.
  6.  
  7. This file is a slighly abbreviated and modified version (i.e. it covers
  8. only the changes relevant for the RISC OS release) of a message sent to
  9. the RasMol mailing list by Roger Sayle.

  13. [...] I've decided to  release a rushed RasMol version 2.6beta2.
  14. This fixes many of the bugs and problems that people have encountered,
  15. adds some more functionality and increases performance.  A complete list
  16. of changes is given below,  but to summarise an acceptable side-by-side
  17. stereo is now working and the  documentation still hasn't been updated.
  18. I'm still not happy with stereo and so this will probably change before
  19. v2.6final.

  21. Changes between RasMol v2.6beta1 and RasMol v2.6beta2
  22.  
  23.   o RasMol now allows a numeric parameter to the "trace" command that
  24.     allows the specification of the width of the "backbone" worm. This
  25.     both fixes a bug in machine generated scripts containing cartoons,
  26.     but also allows functionality such as the new "trace temperature"
  27.     command which displays the backbone as a wider cylinder at high
  28.     temperature factors and thinner at lower.  This representation
  29.     should be useful to x-ray crystallographers and NMR spectroscopists.

  31.   o Side-by-side stereo is now implemented as well as the "set stereo" 
  32.     command to control the separation between the left and right images.
  33.     Note that stereo support is not implemented through out RasMol, for 
  34.     example, Vector PostScript probably shouldn't be generated whilst
  35.     stereo is on, the RasMol "write script" command probably doesn't
  36.     save the stereo state of the current image, turning stereo on and
  37.     off doesn't reposition the center of the molecule and finally the
  38.     performance isn't as good as it could be.

  40.   o Significantly increased the performance of ribbons and cartoons on
  41.     all platforms, but especially on Macintoshes and PCs without hardware 
  42.     accelleration.  All floating point calculations have been removed 
  43.     from the RasMol polygon rendering code which is now integer only.
  44.     [This also has a strong impact on the RISC OS version].
  45.  
  46.   o The RasMol "write gif <filename>" command has been modified to allow
  47.     generation of transparent GIFs.  This may be controlled by the "set 
  48.     transparent on" and "set transparent off" commands.
  49.  
  50.   o RasMol will now display double and triple bonds automatically for any 
  51.     file containing bond order information, rather than require the user
  52.     type "set bonds true".
  53.  
  54.   o Strands, ribbons and cartoons can now be drawn through protein 
  55.     residues that are not standard amino acids (i.e. UNK) provided that 
  56.     the residues contain the appropriate N-CA-C-O atom backbone.
  57.  
  58.   o Vector PostScript output now also contains RasMol distance monitors.
  59.  
  60.   o The RasMol "write mdl <filename>" command to write out an MDL Mol
  61.     file now only writes out the currently selected atoms.

  63.   o RasMol can now perform shading to an arbitrary background colour, 
  64.     rather than just black.  This is controlled by the commands "set
  65.     backfade on" and "set backfade off".  For example, this may be used 
  66.     to generate depth-cued wireframe images that fade to white, rather 
  67.     than black.
  68.  
  69.   o The RasMol PDB file parser has been modified to correctly handle 
  70.     the new "MOL_ID:" molecule names.
  71.  
  72. And probably have a dozen other things that I've forgotten. Alas I've 
  73. become very lazy at keeping the RasMol "ChangeLog" upto date.  My 
  74. apologies for all those features that were requested but didn't quite
  75. make it into this interim release.
